Five fire departments and two tractor-implements battled a corn stubble field fire in Irvington on Tuesday afternoon.
Irvington Fire Chief Andy McDaniel says the fire spread from the village burn pile and was fueled by the wind. He reports no buildings were ever endangered and there was no crop loss since all the corn in the fields was already cut. McDaniel says the fire was finally stopped by the tractors disking some of the ground to stop the spread.
Irvington Firemen called Hoyleton, Ashley, Centralia Fire Protection District, and Centralia City Firemen for mutual aid assistance.
It took firemen about 45 minutes to bring the fire under control. Some firefighters were on the scene for two and a half hours.
