2024 09/07 – Charles ‘Red’ M. Schwartz

Charles “Red” M. Schwartz, 89, of Centralia, passed away on Sunday, August 11, 2024.

He was born June 19, 1935, in Centralia, the son of Martin John Schwartz and Madelon Delores (Buchanan) Schwartz. Red married the love of his life, Sally (Telford) Schwartz, on September 21, 1954, and she preceded him in death on September 10, 2015.

Red graduated from St. Mary Catholic Grade School, Centralia High School Class of 1953, Centralia Junior College, and Southern Illinois University of Edwardsville with his Associate’s Degree and Bachelors Degree in Business.
Over the years, Red served in many organizations. He was a lifetime member of the Centralia Moose and Centralia Elks Lodge 493. Red helped organize the Sunrise Rotary with Verle Besant. He also served 3 terms on the Board of Directors at Meadow Woods Country Club.

Red was a lifetime member of the St. Mary Catholic Church in Centralia. He served for 19 years as the Finance Chairman, National Council Catholic Schools Award for participation in Parish activities, and ran Calvary Cemetery for 25 years. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Assembly 1418, where he served in all offices, was a 4th Degree, and Grand Knight 1025.

During Red’s working career, he owned the Green Grill in Centralia for 5 years, Dairy King in Carlyle for 5 years, Partnered in Murdoch Distribution in Centralia. He was the first person in the State of Illinois to obtain the Certified Insurance Counsel, Certified Professional Insurance Agent, he was an Insurance Producer for 55 years, and he received numerous awards.

Left to mourn Red’s passing is his son: Mark Schwartz and wife Mary of Farmington, MI; grandchildren: Richard Alan Schwartz, II and wife Amy of Pensacola, FL, Adrienne Bond of Springfield, IL, Jonathan Schwartz and wife Megan of Debary, Florida, Robert Schwartz and fiance Matt Johnson of Chicago, Illinois, Matthew Marcanio of Pensacola, FL, and Charles “Chase” Marcanio and wife Kaylee of Winston, Oregon; great-grandchildren: Richard Schwartz, III, Ally Schwartz, Johnny Schwartz of Pensacola, Florida, Arin Lee and husband Danny of Springfield, Madeline McCaherty of Springfield, Illinois, Bradley Schwartz of Debary, Florida, Radley Marcanio and Nora Marcanio both of Winston, Oregon; brothers: William “Bill” Schwartz and wife Donna of Centralia and Herb Schwartz and wife Suetta of Mt. Vernon; sister: Cindy Snyder and husband Mike of Centralia; sister-in-law: Madeline Schwartz of Carbondale; and several nieces and nephews.

Red was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two sons: Richard Schwartz, Sr. and Kenneth, “Kenny” Schwartz. daughter: Elizabeth “Bethy” Marcanio, an infant sister, sisters: Carolyn Shook, brother-in-law Tony Shook, brother: Michael Schwartz, sister-in-law: Janice Schwartz, sister: Linda Smith and brother: Stanley Schwartz,

Visitation will be held Friday, September 6, 2024, from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home in Centralia.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, September 7, 2024, at 10:00 AM at St. Mary Catholic Church in Centralia with burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. A lunch will be hosted after and will be announced after Mass. These services will be simultaneous with a Celebration of Life for Elizabeth “Bethy” (Schwartz) Marcanio. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church and/or St. Mary Catholic Grade School and will be accepted at the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home at 235 North Sycamore Street Centralia, Illinois 62801, (618)532-3523, who is honored to be of service to Red’s Family.
