The Centralia City Council has approved a $1 a year lease with the Centralia Community Youth Center Association for continued use of its building on East Rexford Street.

Executive Director Herb Williams says having the lease in place will clear the way for an 80 to 100 foot addition that is planned with a $249,000 state grant.

“Will allow for us to continue to move forward with the grant we received several months ago to add on to the Youth Center.  This grant will allow us to have room for activities and for our tutoring and also give us space to have people come in and have their banquets and that type of thing.”

Williams says they are still working on getting plans approved so no date is yet set to begin the work.

For the city, City Manager Kory Smith says the agreement releases them from liability and claims.

The council also approved the first $27,188 distribution from the downtown tax increment financing district commitment to help Re:Purpose Development LLC redevelop two downtown buildings. The money will be used for professional services.

The council agreed to move forward with court action to tear down condemned homes at 160 Washington, 618 North Beech, 1124 South Hickory, 529 North Cherry, 905 South Hickory, 909 South Hickory, 504 North Beech and 1208 Case Street.

The council approved an amendment to the zoning ordinance to allow current billboards to be updated to electronic monument signs with a special use permit from the planning commission.
