The non-profit agency that manages electricity across a 15-state area including South Central Illinois has raised its level of concern about having enough power to deliver on Thursday afternoon.
MISO is now at level 2A where they are asking for voluntary conservation from customers. The conservation request in this area includes both Ameren Illinois and Tri-County Electric.
Ameren Illinois’ Tucker Kennedy says all-time peak usage across the MISO territory is anticipated at three on Thursday afternoon.
The chairman and president of Ameren Transmission Company Shawn Schukar said while there is currently enough energy available to cover customers’ energy needs, by taking proactive steps now, everyone can help our neighbors and communities across Missouri and Illinois stay safe in the dangerous heat.
Customers should keep safe by using their air conditioning, but Ameren suggests they consider taking these actions on Thursday:
- Raise the temperature on your thermostat by a few degrees.
- Close curtains and blinds. Use curtains and blinds to block out direct sunlight, especially during the hottest part of the afternoon. Keeping curtains and drapes closed can help reduce the heat indoors by 33%.
- Defer appliance usage. Wait to run your dishwasher, washing machine, or any high-energy appliances until after 10 p.m. tonight.
If customers do not have a cool place to stay, visit a cooling center or public space for a break to help you stay safe until temperatures cool.
