Roberta Mae Scherer, 91, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 5:45 pm Wednesday, August 14, 2024, at Mount Vernon Countryside Manor in Mount Vernon.
She was born October 2, 1932, in Wayne City, Illinois to the late Jessie and Josephine Agnes (Laird) Stroud. Roberta married Jacob F. “Jake” Scherer in 1956 in Nashville, Illinois. He preceded her in death on July 1, 2018.
Roberta is survived by her children, Brenda Braden of Benton, Illinois, Patricia “Patsy” Mourey of Bluford, Illinois, Rhonda Linza and husband, Michael of Grand Junction, Colorado, J.D. Scherer and wife, Melody of Mount Vernon, Illinois, and Roger Scherer of The Woodlands, Texas; grandchildren, Gwendolyn “Gwen” Sweetin and husband, Rodney of Benton, Illinois, Jason Mourey of Belleville, Texas, Chasity Mourey of Katy, Texas, Jessica Ashby and husband, Jon of Mount Vernon, Illinois, Jaymi Johnson and husband, Adam of The Woodlands, Texas, Ashley Scherer of Katy, Texas, and Derek Riley of Grand Junction, Colorado; eleven great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; siblings, Johnnie Stroud of Aurora, Illinois and Barbara Davis and husband, Larry of Fairfield, Illinois; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In addition to her parents and beloved husband, Roberta was preceded in death by her great-grandson, Rylan K. Ashby; daughter-in-law, Diane Scherer; her infant brother; and sister, Mary Ruth Murphy.
Roberta worked at Sharp’s and Bolerjack’s Market. She retired from the Meat Cutter’s Union. She later went back to work at McDonald’s and retired at the age of 88. Roberta also enjoyed helping out Cindi’s Catering. She could often be found out square dancing with her husband, Jake, or at home doing embroidery. Roberta was also known for being an excellent cook. She will be dearly missed.
A Visitation will be held on Sunday, August 18, 2024, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon. A Funeral Service will begin at 2:00 pm with Mr. Marty Mills officiating. Interment will follow at Thomason Cemetery in Wayne City. Memorials may be made in Roberta’s honor to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
