Centralia Economic Development Director Derek Sherman says local management of the CVS store in downtown Centralia has confirmed the store will be closing on Wednesday, September 6th.

The decision follows CVS taking over the pharmacies at Schnuck’s stores a few years ago.   All prescriptions currently at the downtown CVS will be transferred to the location in the Schnuck’s store.

Sherman is hopeful to discuss the potential use of the downtown Centralia store for another CVS subsidiary that provides wellness services or in the alternative work with CVS to find a buyer or another occupant for the building.

CVS is currently in cost-cutting mode, announcing earlier this week it will lay off about 5,000 of its 300,000 employees nationwide.  In 2021, CVS announced it would close 900 stores.  That’s about 10 percent of its total number of stores.
