Both Iuka and Salem Firemen were called to extinguish out of control brush fires on Sunday afternoon.
Iuka Assistant Chief Chad Eagan says a controlled burn got out of control on the Richard and Phyllis Smith property on Michael Road northwest of Iuka and spread to an old barn that was in the process of being torn down. There was only minor damage to the barn before the fire was extinguished. Salem Firemen responded with automatic mutual aid, but were canceled once Iuka quickly extinguished the fire.
Salem Firemen were called to the Doyle McLean property in the 700 block of South Washington to an out of control brush fire. The fire also included other debris. The fire was about 15 to 20 feet away from a home, which was not damaged. Firemen were on the scene about a half hour.
