Attorney General Kwame Raoul says Illinois is joining a nationwide crackdown on illegal telemarketing and robocalls.

“Operation Stop Scam Calls” is going after telemarketers, the companies that hire them and what are called “lead generators” that trick people into giving them personal information that is then sold to telemarketers.  Attorney General Raoul says they also want service providers to take responsibility.

“Our goal is that telecom providers commit to knowing your customer, knowing your traffic, participating in highly technical call authentication efforts, cooperating with law enforcement on call trace back efforts and provide call blocking.”

As part of the effort…Raoul and his counterparts in 48 other states are suing Avid Telecom.  They allege the company initiated and facilitated more than 7.5 billion robocalls to people who had signed up for the national Do Not Call registry.
