Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon and Marion County Sheriff Kevin Cripps have announced a Xylazine drug death has been confirmed in Marion County.

While further details are not being released at this time, the two county officials feel it is important to get the word out to citizens in Marion and surrounding communities who may use fentanyl, heroin, or other illegal drugs.   Xylazine is commonly mixed with other drugs and commonly goes by the nickname of ‘tranq’, tranq dope’, or the ‘zombie drug’.   Xylazine is a drug used for sedation, anesthesia, muscle relaxation, and analgesia in animals such as horses, cattle, and other non-human mammals.

The two warn Xylazine does NOT respond to Narcan.   However, Narcan should still be used due to this drug commonly being mixed with other Opioid drugs such as heroin and fentanyl.  Overuse of the drug can lead to rotting skin ulcerations and ultimately limb amputations if untreated, hence its horrifying nickname ‘zombie drug’
