One person was killed and six were injured when an SUV lost control early Tuesday morning for unknown reasons and ran off southbound I-57 near milepost 89 about five miles south of Mt. Vernon.
State Police say after leaving the roadway, the vehicle rolled over in the median.
One juvenile passenger was pronounced dead on the scene by Jefferson County Coroner Roger Hayse. The six other occupants in the vehicle were transported to Mt. Vernon hospitals for treatment of injuries.
Jefferson Fire reports they had to remove a door to help get the driver out of the vehicle. They said three of the passengers sustained serious injuries, while the other three were walking around the scene.
The names of those in the SUV have not been released, but Jefferson Fire reports they are not from the area.
The crash was reported at 5:05 Tuesday morning. State Police say at approximately 7:28 a.m., both southbound lanes of I-57 were shut down for the traffic crash investigation. Both lanes reopened to traffic at about 8:50 Tuesday morning.
