The Salem Daughters of American Revolution dedicated Salem’s ‘Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Never Forget Garden Marker’ as part of the city’s 200th birthday celebration on Saturday.
Mayor Nic Farley opened the ceremony by thanking those responsible.
“This will serve as a lasting tribute and the steadfast reminder of the courage of the sacrifice that defines our great nation.”
As part of the ceremony, Julie Barnes of the DAR also presented a special award to retired Marion County Educator and lifelong historian Frank Brinkerhoff.
“Because of his knowledge, he has helped Marion County and Salem, Illinois to preserve the historical stories of our area. He has helped us preserve our past, shared with the present, and hopes to help us all continue to tell our stories for future generations. Congratulations Frank Brinkerhoff from Isaac Hull Chapter NSDAR. It is our honor to present to you today the Excellent and Community Service Award.”
In accepting the award, Brinkerhoff noted he was actually a relative of Isaac Hull and can also trace his family back to the time of the Revolutionary War.
The history of the Bryan Statue Garden which dates back to 2006 was shared by Sharon Blair. Troy Williams, a former member of the Old Guard US Army unit that is assigned to guard the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington National Cemetery and to escort the President, discussed the legislation that created the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in 1920.
Master of Ceremonies Karen Short concluded the program before the unveiling and read the wording of the marker.
“Tomb of the Unknown Soldier Never Forget Garden. This garden is a living tribute to all of America’s Veterans and their families. In silence and respect, this is a place to remember why millions of Americans have fought and died for our liberty and our freedom. Here we renew our promise to fulfill America’s sacred duty to never forget. Here we renew our mutual pledge to support them with our lives and fortunes and our sacred honor.”
The ‘Never Forget Garden Markers’ are being placed nationwide. The Salem Marker is now registered with the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
