The past music of the Salem Community High School and Franklin Park bands was remembered during a Bicentennial weekend concert at SCHS by the Salem Community Band and Choir.

Debbie Woodruff who has brought together the group says there are now 74 members of the band and choir.

“I was really pleased.  It looked like we had about 192 people here.  In this heat and this kind of weather, I think that is an excellent turnout.  I think the people enjoyed it.”

The audience included one of the retired Franklin Park band directors Galen Brant.

“A great big thank you to all the people, all the former players, all the present, it’s just fantastic to have people in Salem still loving music.  That is the whole idea of music education.  Thank you, thank you Salem, and all the people.”

The band director Matt Webster is also pleased with how the group has come together.

“I thought it pulled together really nice.  Everyone was watching, listening, and putting emotion into the music.  That’s what is meaningful to me.  When you don’t just hear the notes, but you hear the music and emotion.”

The next performance of the Salem Community Band and Choir will be their Christmas Concert in December.
