Salem and Marion County celebrated their 200th Birthday on Saturday with a number of historic displays and re-enactments in Bryan Memorial Park.   The concert at the Bryan Park band stage was cut short when severe thunderstorms were approaching.

Salem Mayor Nic Farley began the morning by declaring 2023 the Bicentennial Year in the city.

“Our beloved city has been the home to generations of industrious and compassionate citizens who have worked tirelessly to build a striving and inclusive community.  Salem’s Bicentennial represents a significant milestone in our journey as a city, providing us with an opportunity to reflect upon past achievements, honor the sacrifices who came before us, and envision a promising future for the next generation.”

State Representative Blaine Wilhour was on hand Saturday afternoon to present an Illinois House resolution honoring Salem’s past history on its 200th birthday.

“It’s been a great first 200 years and here’s to the next 200 years of success in the City of Salem and Marion County.”

The chair of the Salem Historical Commission Luke Purcell read from a letter of congratulations from Governor JB Pritzker.

“The longevity is truly a testament to the impact and relationships fostered through the years.    I have no doubt that Salem will continue to excel in the years to come. I commend the leadership of Salem for their hard work, dedication, and passion.  Your leadership makes our state a better place.”

Some of the activities in the park included a Civil War reenactment group that fired a period cannon several times, talks from actors portraying some of Salem’s early residents, and displays by numerous organizations.   A sand volleyball tournament was also held.  A 5K run had to be canceled due to storm activity Saturday morning.
