ST. LOUIS (AP) — Harrison Bader had a first-inning sacrifice fly in his return to St. Louis, rookie Anthony Volpe hit a go-ahead triple as part of his fifth straight multihit game and the New York Yankees beat the Cardinals 6-2 for a doubleheader split. St. Louis won the rain-interrupted opener 11-4 as Paul Goldschmidt hit a go-ahead, three-run homer off Luis Severino in a five-run third and Jack Flaherty pitched six shutout innings. Goldschmidt had four RBIs and Nolan Gorman also homered for the Cardinals, who reached double-digit runs for the first time since May 21.
CHICAGO (AP) — Rookie Tanner Bibee and three relievers combined on a five-hitter, and the Cleveland Guardians beat the Chicago Cubs 6-0. Bibee tossed three-hit ball into the sixth while outpitching Marcus Stroman, and the Guardians came out on top in a game delayed 2 hours, 45 minutes at the start because of rain. Amed Rosario lined a two-run single in the third. Andrés Giménez chased Stroman with an RBI single in a four-run sixth, and the Guardians bounced back after getting pounded 10-1 the previous night. The Cubs matched a season high with their fifth straight loss after winning 11 of 13. Bibee went 5 2/3 innings and matched a season high with nine strikeouts while walking two.
OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Tyler Wade slid into home with the winning run after second baseman Elvis Andrus misplayed a 10th-inning grounder, giving the Oakland Athletics a 7-6 victory over the Chicago White Sox. Oakland overcame 3-1 and 6-4 deficits to win consecutive games for the first time since a seven-game winning streak from June 6-13. The A’s, a major league-worst 23-62, won for the fourth time in 16 games and are on pace to finish 44-118. They drew a crowd of just 9,235, their 25th under 10,000 in 43 home games.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Shohei Ohtani’s walkup music most of last season was the theme to “The Greatest Showman.” After the Los Angeles Angels star’s June, he should consider returning to it. Ohtani hit 15 home runs, the most in a month in Angels history. He is also the first player in 10 years to reach 30 on the season before July 1. The power numbers, though, are only part of the story of a dominant month. His .394 average, 41 hits, and 29 RBIs are his best in any month.
