The City of Salem’s celebration of its 200th birthday is set for Saturday.

Salem City Clerk Tabatha Meador who is chairing the event says a full day of activities is set in Bryan Memorial Park beginning with a 5K run at 8:30 and a Sand Volleyball Tournament at 9 am.  You need to pre-register for the 5K run with Jed Casburn at Salem City Hall and for the Sand Volleyball Tournament with Amy Laird who you may contact for information at alaird35@gmail.com.

At ten am, there will be a dedication of the ‘Never Forget’ Garden at the Bryan Park statue.

The 1st Illinois Battery Light Artillens and the Ragged Raiders Civil War Reenactment Group will open camp at ten am.  A cannon will be fired on the hour until two pm.

A number of historical displays are planned by the Salem Rotary, Dr. Mark Murfin, City of Salem and Salem Fire Protection District from ten to two.  During that same period, the DAR will be hosting games.

You’ll be able to see a number of citizens from Salem’s early days portrayed as the Salem Rotary Club has arranged for some of those involved in Tales of East Lawn to tell their stories.

Ten food trucks offering a variety of products will open at eleven am and will be available through the end of the program at nine Saturday night.

Meador says music on the Bryan Park Stage is set from three to nine pm.

“At 3pm it’s a family/kid friendly sing along with Mr. Bill so kids are encouraged to attend.  At 4pm is Jeremy, Adam and the surviving members.  At 5:20 is Taylor Steele and the Love Preachers.  She has participated in the Fourth of July for the last 3 years and she is fantastic and usually draws a crowd.  At 7pm, a Tom Petty Tribute Band.”

Meador says that the area around the celebration in Bryan Memorial Park will be shutoff to vehicular traffic with everyone asked to park at Salem Community High School.  A shuttle service will be made available to the park.
