A 53-year-old Odin man was trapped underneath a shed he was helping to tear down when the roof collapsed Tuesday afternoon.
Odin Fire Chief Greg Smith says Tracy Deadmond was helping his son with the project at 206 West DePew Street. He reportedly had been told to take a break while his son went to get something to drink. But Deadmond continued to remove some boards which eventually led to the roof collapsing on top of him.
Firemen worked for ten to 15 minutes to remove the roof, but didn’t move Deadmond until United Medical Response was able to administer some pain medication for an apparent injury to his right leg.
An Air Evac medical helicopter landed across the alley in a vacant lot on Merritt Street and took Deadmond to a St. Louis hospital.
A relative who was inside the nearby home heard the noise from the roof collapse and called for help.
Smith said Deadmond was currently a resident of the Odin Care Center where he was undergoing therapy following an earlier car crash in Clinton County and was allowed to leave the care center during the day.
The call came in at 1:42 Tuesday afternoon, with firemen on the scene for about an hour. Salem Firemen stood by at the Odin Fire Station in the event of another fire.
