A Columbia, Missouri trucker was trapped in his vehicle following a wild ride after his truck hit a tire that had come off the trailer of a semi going the other direction.

Mt. Vernon City Firemen say the incident occurred a quarter mile south of the Veterans Memorial Drive exit when the northbound trucker hit the tire from a southbound semi and lost control.   The truck ran off the east side of the road, went through a ditch, traveled 200 yards through the brush before going down an embankment and coming to a stop at the edge of a containment pond.

Due to the difficulty of the terrain, Mt. Vernon Firemen called Jefferson Fire and Waltonville Firemen to the scene with side-by-sides.   After the driver’s side door was removed to get the driver out, he was transported to a side-by-side with a stokes basket to an ambulance and taken to SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital in Mt. Vernon.

The truck was not hauling any hazardous cargo.

Kell Firemen were called to man the Mt. Vernon fire department in the event of another fire.  The incident occurred at 2:12 Friday afternoon.
