Bill on Governor’s desk would require health insurers to cover hearing aids

Legislation awaiting the Governor’s signature requires health insurers to cover hearing aids.

Currently in Illinois, insurance companies only have to cover hearing aids for patients under 18.  This bill expands that to include adults.  Some argued this would cost insurers too much, but Presentative Diane Blair-Sherlock of Villa Park disagreed.

“My daughter who is a public school teacher cannot afford her own hearing aids which cost me $15,000.  That’s a drop in the bucket for an insurance company.  People with hearing loss, it is not their fault.  They shouldn’t have to pay for that.”

About 20 other states have similar laws.
