Ellis W. Charlton, age 67 of Salem, passed away on Saturday, May 25, 2024, at HSHS St. Elizabeth Hospital in O’Fallon, Illinois.

Ellis was born on August 9, 1956, in Fort Lewis, Washington the son of Glen Sr. and Nancy (Webster) Smith.  He married Anita Booher on May 17, 1974, at the Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church and together they enjoyed 50 years of marriage.

Survivors include his wife, Anita Charlton of Salem; four sons, Tony Charlton and wife Raedena of Kell; Tim Charlton and wife Danielle of Marion; Trevor Charlton; and Todd Charlton and wife Georgina of Rantoul; grandchildren,  Dillon, Cheyanne, Alexis, Mikaela, Dakotah, Ethan, Cameron, Colton, Maddox, Jensen, Searra, Andrew, David, Elanohr, and Peyton; great-grandchildren, Skyeleigh, Hendrix, Presley, Saylor, Emersyn, Ryker, Kayne, Rosie, Delani, and Delilah; mother-in-law, Kathryn Booher; siblings, Kathy Smith, Ernie Smith, Jim Charlton, Randy Charlton, Terry “Bud” Smith, and Josh Charlton; and a brother-in-law, Greg Booher.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Glen and Nancy Smith; two granddaughters, Adalynn and Sophiya; a great-granddaughter, Makenna; siblings, Joyce Ann, Vernon, and J.R.; his father-in-law, David Booher; and a brother-in-law, Wally Booher.

Ellis was the owner and operator of Charlton’s Auto Repair in Salem.  In his free time, he loved hunting, fishing, and shooting guns and enjoyed tapping maple trees to make his own maple syrup.

Funeral services for Ellis Charlton will be held on Thursday, May 30, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. at Crouse Funeral Home in Salem with Jim Burleyson officiating.  Burial will follow at Harvey’s Point Cemetery in Cartter.  There will be a visitation on Wednesday evening at the funeral home from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m.   Memorial contributions can be made to the Harvey’s Point Cemetery or the American Cancer Society and will be received at the funeral home.  Online condolences and memories can be left at www.CrouseFH.com.
