State Police have released preliminary details on a fatal crash Thursday night at West Main and Hotze Road on the west side of Salem.
The person killed was 66-year-old Nita Mobley of Salem. Her vehicle caught fire after the crash and she was pronounced deceased at the scene by Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon.
Mobley was attempting to make a left turn from West Main to South Hotze Road when she was struck by an eastbound pickup on West Main driven by 21-year-old Justin Bullard of Iuka. Bullard and passenger, 25-year-old Austin Back of Iuka, were transported to Salem Township Hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Salem Fire Protection Assistant Chief Bill Fulton says Mobley’s car was fully engulfed in flames when they arrived on the scene. They extinguished the fire and also helped free Back from the pickup truck.
The crash occurred at 9:07 Thursday night. The road was not reopened until around four Friday morning.
Salem Police, Marion County Sheriff’s Deputies, Salem Emergency Management Agency, and United Medical Response were all on the scene in addition to State Police and the Marion County Coroner.
State Police say the crash is still under investigation and no other information is currently being released.
