Jefferson Fire says a leaf fire started by a man cutting grass spread to a home that ended up being a total loss.
The fire was in the 21,000 block of North Stratford Lane in rural Texico.
When firefighters arrived, the fire had already engulfed much of the home and had burned through the roof. Due to the intensity of the fire, firefighters initially had to fight the fire from outside until they could get the flames knocked down.
The entire single story structure that was in the process of being renovated and was unoccupied received heavy fire and smoke damage and the roof burned off.
The fire call came in at 1:07 Wednesday afternoon, with firemen on the scene until 3:30 pm.
Mt. Vernon City, Kell, Bluford and Wayne City all provided mutual aid at the scene, while Salem and Waltonville stood by at the Jefferson Fire Station.
