Salem City officials say trash and unauthorized items not allowed in compost/yard waste collection

By WJBD Staff Apr 28, 2023 | 11:46 AM

The Salem Public Works Department is reporting a large amount of trash and unauthorized items are being mixed with other items in the compost/yard waste collection bags.

City officials say if the problem persists, customers which are in violation will be warned and then penalized. They note the rules are in place to ensure that the compost collection program can continue running in compliance with the IEPA regulations the city must follow.

As a reminder, city officials say yard waste collected by the City of Salem must consist only of grass clippings, leaves, and small sticks. They must be placed in city approved degradable paper bags which are available for sale at various businesses in the city. Tree limbs must be bundled in four-foot bundles, not exceeding 50 pounds in weight.

The Public Works Department reports they appreciate everyone’s cooperation. If you have questions regarding the policies, or would like to discuss the issue further, please contact the City of Salem at 548-2222 extension 26.
