The Franklin Park Student Council has raised $2,400 for the victims of the March 31st tornado on the south side of Salem.

Secretary Brenna Hays says the money was raised through the sale of popsicles at both Franklin Park and Hawthorn and then a matching donation.

“The student council realized that the victims of the Salem tornado were deeply and utterly affected.  So we realized we needed to do something about it.  We set up a fundraiser where we sold popsicles to Franklin Park and Hawthorne.  And now the Peoples State Bank of Salem is also matching our $1200 raised from our middle and elementary school.”

Hays says she was amazed at how much the students wanted to help the tornado victims.

Members of the Salem Area Foundation were on hand to accept the check along with Salem Mayor Nic Farley.

“I’m really impressed with the young people and the empathy they have and the dedication to help others is really impressive.  It shows a lot of leadership from our young community and shows we are in good hands in the future.”

The Salem Area Foundation is receiving donations from several special events and a tally of money raised so far is not yet available. The group is also working to determine how the money can be best used to help those impacted by the tornado.
