The Centralia City Council has voted to demolish the old pools at Fairview Park. However, the bath house will be saved because it could have some use if a decision is made to construct a new outside pool in Fairview Park.
Councilman Spanky Smith, who serves on the committee studying a new pool, says there is no reason to keep the old pool.
“Where we are wanting to take the old pool out and get it physically remediated removed. It’s been an eye sore and it has been a liability issue and could continue to be. We want to make sure to get that part of it covered and then move on with Burbach Aquatics to the next phase.”
Mayor Bryan Kuder agrees, fearing someone could fall into the 15 foot deep pool and have no way to get out until someone found them.
The pool committee is scheduled to meet at five Tuesday night at Centralia City Hall. They will receive a report from Burbach Aquatics who is studying the feasibility of constructing a new pool.
The council approved the purchase of $10,998 in new playground equipment from AAA State of Play. A merry go round and teeter totter will be placed at Laura Leake Park and a merry go round at Fairview Park.
The city council approved having the Farmers Market return to the city parking lot on South Locust for another year with Terry Herrell remaining as Market Master.
