Centralia City Council moves forward with purchase of new police radios

The Centralia City Council Monday night agreed to replace 30 portable radios at the police department.

Police Chief Chris Locke says the old radios are no longer dependable.

“Some of them are 20 years old and we’ve noticed problems even after I took over the officers were having difficulty reaching back to dispatch, reaching to other agencies or contacting each other, which is an officer safety issue.  We want to make sure we take care of our officers.  And not only benefits them but they are in situations often times when people need medical assistance.  If they can’t get out, every minute they can’t get help puts that person in more danger.”

The city council agreed to waive the bidding requirements and accept a proposal from Global Technical Systems, Inc. at a cost of $36,720.

City Manager Kory Smith noted the only other quote was for a price $500 more per unit and would not be available for eight to ten months.

The council also approved bids from Beelman Logistics and Don Anderson Company to deliver materials for the summer oil and chip road maintenance program at a total cost of $139,410.

The council approved a forgivable loan agreement from TIF#3 to Karen and Wayne Piotrowski for a facade improvement at 140 South Poplar.

The council approved the Mayor’s appointments of John Lynch and David Stock to the Centralia Fire and Police Commission.
