The Salem Historical Commission will celebrate what would have been William Jennings Bryan’s birthday on Sunday.
Commission member Luke Purcell says three activities are planned.
“The William Jennings Bryan home on South Broadway will be open from one to three. We’ll have some period-type music from the early 20th Century. Visitors will be able to visit and view all of the booths and displays at the museum there. We’ll also have the museum downtown open at 115 South Broadway open directly across from the ABC. We’ll have music there as well. It will be open during the same time frame of one to three.”
Purcell says the celebration will then move to the First Presbyterian Church on East McMackin Street.
“We’ll have refreshments and a speech by [Marion County Historian] Frank Brinkerhoff and for a recording that he has of William Jennings Bryan which he will play as well.”
Sunday would have been William Jennings Bryan’s 164th birthday. He was a three-time unsuccessful candidate for President as well as holding several national offices.
