Nine fire departments along with the Marion County grain bin rescue team were called back to the Gateway FS facility in Waltonville Tuesday night after additional fire was seen coming from stored wheat in one of the large bins.
Additional wheat was removed and fire officials now believe all of the wheat that was smoldering since a fire began last Friday has been taken out. Just about a quarter of the 88,000 bushels of wheat in the large bin remain.
The additional fire was found by FS employees who had continued to empty the bin after firemen had left the scene on Monday night.
The fire is believed to have been triggered by a door cut into the bin last Friday.
Waltonville called Jefferson Fire, Mt. Vernon City Fire, Sesser, Valier, Benton, Woodlawn and West City for mutual aid in addition to the Marion County grain rescue team that had members from Salem, Iuka, Patoka and the Centralia Fire Protection District.
The fire call came in at seven Tuesday night with firemen on the scene until about midnight.
