A fire that started in the laundry room caused fire and smoke damage to about half of a west side Centralia home Tuesday morning.
The fire was at the Kevin Foley home at 510 East Haven Drive. Three people were home when the fire was discovered when one woke up to the smell of smoke. While one family member attempted to fight the fire initially, all were outside and uninjured when firemen arrived.
Centralia City Fire Chief Jeff Day says it appears the fire started in the area of the fuse box that was next to the washer and dryer. The fire had spread to a kitchenette and main kitchen with flames venting through a window to the back porch. The fire was also burning into a power line that was arcing.
Day says they got a quick knockdown and kept the fire and smoke out of the bedroom area of the home.
All available Centralia City Firemen were called to the scene. The Centralia Fire Protection District was called on mutual aid. Sandoval Fire stood by in the event of another fire. The Red Cross was called in to assist the family.
The fire call first came in at 5:45 Tuesday morning, with firemen on the scene for about two hours.
Day is estimating damage to the house at $35,000 with an additional $15,000 in damage to the contents.
