Doris Eileen Slater, 100, of Mount Vernon, Illinois, passed away at 5:20 am January 20, 2024, at White Oak Rehabilitation and Health Care Center in Mount Vernon.
She was born March 2, 1923, in Waltonville, Illinois to the late Clive F. and Irene (Metcalf) Hartley. Doris married Elmer B. Slater, Jr. on January 27, 1946, in Thompsonville, Illinois. They were blessed with forty-nine years of marriage before he preceded her in death on March 18, 1995.
Doris is survived by her son, Roger Slater and special friend, Pam MacPhee; daughter, Karen Pennington and husband, Paul; grandson, Scott Pennington and wife, Amanda; granddaughter, Lisa Harrington and husband, Tracy; great-granddaughters, Brittney and Caitlin; great-grandson, Austin Pennington; nephew, Alan Williams and wife Kathy; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
In addition to her parents and husband, Doris was preceded in death by her sister, Marjorie Williams; brother-in-law, Max Williams; and nephew, Dale Williams.
Doris was a member of the Universalist Church in Waltonville and played the piano for many years at the church. She loved her cats and flowers. Above all, Doris loved her family and will be dearly missed.
A Visitation will be held Friday, February 2, 2024, from 11:00 to 12:00 pm at Newell Funeral Home in Waltonville, Illinois. A Funeral Service will begin at noon with Pastor Tim Reynolds officiating. Interment will follow at Knob Prairie Cemetery in Waltonville, Illinois. Memorials may be made in Doris’ honor to Waltonville Fire Department or Knob Prairie Cemetery.
