By Bruce Kropp Jan 30, 2023 | 8:42 AM

Larry Gene Sloat, 82, of Walnut Hill, passed away Wednesday, January 24, 2024, at SSM Health Good Samaritan Hospital.

His parents Harry Sloat and Della (Hixenbaugh) Sloat welcomed Larry into this world nearly 83 years ago on January 27, 1941, in our humble town of Centralia.

Larry left behind his last surviving sibling, his brother: Ronnie Sloat; nephews: Ronnie A. Sloat and his wife Lisa and Randy Dean Sloat and his wife Rhonda all of Centralia; and many other nieces and nephews.

Upon his heavenly arrival home, Larry was reunited with his parents: Harry and Della Sloat; two sisters: Dorothy Campbell and Helen Holt; and five brothers: Clifford, Howard, Edgar, Bob, and Jack Sloat.

Larry was a simple, humble man. He will be remembered for his green thumb and hard work ethic. He was an outdoorsman through and through. He cut wood all winter long and poured his dedication into his farm during the summer. His labor proved bountiful as he was well known for his strawberries at the Centralia farmers market. His absence will be left by those who knew him and he will be dearly missed.

Per Larry Sloat’s wishes, cremation rites will be accorded and no public services will be held. The family of Larry would like to suggest that those who wish to make a monetary donation in his memory please consider donating to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital. These donations can be collected at Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home at 235 North Sycamore Street in Centralia, Illinois 62801 (618) 532-3523, who is honored to be of service to the Sloat family. Online condolences may be made to the family by visiting www.sutherlandfuneralhome.com or the Funeral Home’s Facebook page.
