A wood-burning stove apparently started a Monday night fire that damaged a mobile home in the Royal Lakes Neighborhood south of Odin.

Odin fire chief Greg Smith says Sara Schroder was preparing for bed when she checked the wood-burning stove and saw smoke in the living room.  She went to the nearby owner of the home, David Bivens, for help.

The fire department was then called.  Upon arrival, a lot of smoke was coming out of the facia board.  As items were being moved out of the home, firemen arrived and saw fire in the ceiling.  Part of the ceiling was pulled down to put out the fire.

Smith says the damage was confined to the ceiling area with virtually no smoke damage to the living area of the home.

However, power had to be turned off and the Red Cross was called to assist Schroder and her two-year-old son.

Sandoval and Salem Firemen provided mutual aid on the scene, while Centralia City Firemen stood by at the Odin Fire Station in the event of another fire.

Damage to a rural Odin mobile home Monday night is mostly contained above the ceiling area.
