The winning team last year from Sheri Hargis and Amy Telford's home rooms pose with their collection of can goods.

The Salem Community High School Student Council canned food drive came to an end Monday morning with 25,394 cans of food collected.   That’s up from the 23,860 cans collected last year.

Student Council Sponsor Matt Donoho made the announcement as classes were bringing their canned goods to the small gym.

“So proud of our students.  They recognized a need in our community and that these cans are distributed to people in need here in our community, especially during these tough times.  I don’t think we could be any prouder of our students who stepped up and helped us beat last year’s total.”

The homeroom team of Sherry Hargis and Amy Telford ran away with first place, collecting 8,959 cans.

Senior Maya Susmena was in Ms. Telford’s class.

“We did a lot through the community.  We asked businesses, our parents, friends of friends to give whatever they could.”

Iris Arnold is a senior who has been involved in the food drive all four years of high school.

“We all pitched in the first day we got out and went to other staff members here and any parents or businesses and asked for money or cans or anything they had to offer.”

Sophomore Aden Bass summed up the thoughts of several other students in the winning classes.

“We want to help out in the community.  And a nice way we all could get together and do it.”

The second-place team was Trina Green and Lillie Risley’s home rooms.   Both the first and second-place teams will get a pizza party.

After all the canned food was gathered in the small gym, students helped load up a semi donated by Meador Boys Express to take the food to the Salem Community Activity Center where it is being used to replenish the food pantry.

SCHS students load the can goods into the truck for the trip to the Salem Ministerial Alliance Food Pantry.
