The Marion County Board Tuesday night approved a 3.9-percent increase in the property tax levy on a 7-6 vote.
Some of the board members who voted no didn’t appear happy with the size of the increase. Those voting against it were Sharon Woodward, Wes Gozia, Deb Reed, Judy Shafer, Chris Krupp, and David Iossi.
The board also approved its tentative budget for the coming fiscal year after considerable discussion on if wage increases not yet fully negotiated should be included. The board didn’t make any changes as they hope to have a new four-year contract in place with the Laborer’s Union before the November 10th meeting where final approval could be given to the budget. Board member Wes Gozia, who raised the concern of including tentative wage information, cast the only no vote. The budget is now on review in the county clerk’s office until the November 10th meeting.
The board approved a payment to Ameresco for ongoing building improvements totaling just over $ 2 million.
Building Committee Chair Dr. Creighton Engel reported the third-floor bathroom renovation was now complete at the courthouse. The renovation of the State’s Attorney’s office is the next project, followed by the renovation of the first-floor bathrooms. Engel says work is moving quickly on second-phase improvements to the Public Service Building. Sheriff Andy Garden reported work on the new jail roof was now complete.
The board agreed to add another member to the 911 Emergency Phone System Board. Salem Deputy Police Chief Susan Miller was approved for the new post. Jeff Purcell was reappointed to the Salem Airport Authority.
