The Jefferson County Fire Protection District handled five fire calls on Saturday, including extinguishing three in violation of the district’s fire ban before they could spread and become a problem.

The largest fire occurred early Sunday morning when a fire to burn off brush on the Triston Hawkins property in the 11-thousand block of North Log Cabin Lane get out of hand and burned four acres.    Jefferson County received mutual aid assistance from Bluford Firemen who spent two and a half hours putting out the fire that was reported at 3:31 am.

Firemen say another fire started when leaves being mulched caught fire when coming into contact with a hot lawn mower.   The fire was blown across a quarter acre of land before being put out.   The lawn mower was not damaged.  The fire call came in at three pm.

Firemen put out a fire in a 40 by 20-foot brush pile Saturday on the Brian Staats property in the 19-thousand block of Village Lane in rural Texico.  The fire was reportedly in violation of the burn ban and was dropping embers into a nearby field.

Firemen were called out twice to an Amish sawmill owned by William Miller at 11,311 North Lighthouse Lane when some junk piles were set on fire.

Jefferson Fire reports none of the fires were threatening buildings.
