Two Salem Community High School students were formally charged in Marion County Court on Monday with aggravated battery and mob action following an alleged assault on a third student at the school on October 5th.

Salem Police Chief Kyle Ambuehl released details on the case Monday.   He says 18-year-old Carter Owens of North Broadway in Salem and a 17-year-old male juvenile were taken into custody on Friday following an investigation and school discipline.   Ambuehl says the two allegedly assaulted a 15-year-old student in a hallway and a fist fight ensued.   He reports no weapons were involved.

The 15-year-old student was treated for injuries at Salem Township Hospital.

During his first appearance in court Monday afternoon, bond for Owens was set at $5,000.   Prosecutors had asked for $25,000 bond and the public defender for release on personal recognicance bond.  Judge Mark Stedelin noted when setting bond that Owens had no past criminal record, but these were crimes of violence.

The 17-year-old juvenile was also formally charged in court Monday and was ordered to remain detained at the Franklin County Juvenile Detention Facility at Benton until his next court appearance on October 26th.

Both had public defenders appointed to represent them.
