Centralia City Firemen were called to a vacant home at 818 North Elm early Saturday night when a neighboring business reported the strong smell of gas.
When entering the home, firemen discovered the copper gas pipes had been cut while the natural gas to the home was still turned on.
Firemen used their large exhaust fans to clear the concentration of gas from the home without incident. Ameren Illinois then disconnected the gas meter to avoid future issues.
Marion County property records indicate Rosalie Scott is the owner of the vacant home.
The fire call came in at 7:32 Saturday night.
