One person was killed and two others received apparent minor injuries in a crash involving a grain truck and pickup truck at the Vermundy and Farthing Road intersection early Saturday evening a mile and a half east of Vernon.
Marion County Coroner Troy Cannon has not yet released the name of the man killed and Sheriff’s Department reports are not yet complete.
Initial information from the Sheriff’s Department and Patoka Fire Chief Blake Hyde is the grain truck was eastbound on the Vermundy Road when it broadsided the pickup that was traveling northbound on the Farthing Road. There is a stop sign for Farthing Road traffic at the intersection.
Hyde says those working nearby were able to use a piece of farm machinery to pull open the passenger side door to get the passenger in the pickup truck out of the vehicle. She later refused hospital treatment for her injuries.
The driver of the pickup truck was extricated by Patoka and Sandoval Firemen. CPR was then started on the man until Life Star Ambulance arrived and indicated the man had passed away. Deputy Coroner Feron Ice later pronounced the man dead on the scene.
An Air Evac Medical Helicopter had landed nearby to transport the man to a regional hospital before he died.
The driver of the grain truck was reportedly shaken up by the crash and was taken to SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Centralia for treatment.
The crash occurred at 5:35 Saturday evening.
