The Salem Historical Commission has finalized plans for their second annual Tales from East Lawn Cemetery.

The Commission’s Luke Purcell says eight former residents buried in the East Lawn Cemetery will be portrayed.

“It was a big success last year and we’ve added additional tickets this year.  We will have a total of 200 tickets available, 4 shows per night, September 30th and October 1st.  Tickets will be available at City Hall starting on September 1st.  They will be $15 each and 8 people featured this year.  Really looking forward to another successful year.”

Those to be portrayed are:

  • An unidentified victim of the 1971 Tonti Train Wreck
  • Mazzella Broadway was a member of the Joles-Broadway family which was known for their large gatherings in Salem for many years on Memorial Day weekend
  • Charlie and Mamie Becker were circus clowns with the Lamont Circus which was formerly based in Salem
  • Warren Rainey the head of surgery at St. Louis University Hospital was born in Salem and had his body returned upon his death
  • Helen McMackin who was a state and national officer for the DAR
  • JHG Brinkerhoff who wrote Brinkerhoff’s history of Marion County and was a school superintendent
  • Stella Purcell was a farmwife who assisted with the family orchard and died during the Spanish Flu Pandemic in 1918.

You must purchase tickets in advance through Salem City Hall beginning Thursday and those with tickets will have to ride golf carts provided by the Salem Historical Society to and from the Salem Community Activity Center.

Proceeds from Tales from East Lawn will provide funds for the operation of the Salem Historical Museum on South Broadway.
