State Police have released more details on a fatal car-truck crash on US 40 at Spring Street on the east side of St. Elmo on Friday afternoon.
A preliminary investigation indicates 66-year-old Beverly Crawford of St. Elmo was traveling west on US 40 when she swerved to the left and crossed over the center dotted line into the eastbound lane where she collided head-on with a tractor-trailer truck driven by 59-year-old Douglas Tuttle of West Union Illinois.
Fayette County Coroner David Harris pronounced Crawford dead on the scene. A passenger in her car, 67-year-old Rodney Crawford of Saint Elmo, was airlifted to a regional hospital with life-threatening injuries.
Tuttle was not injured.
The crash occurred at 2:03 Friday afternoon. Crash cleanup and investigation closed US 40 to traffic for about three hours.
