A Mt. Vernon home received significant damage in a fire that started in a garage and then spread to the home that was separated by a breezeway.
Mt. Vernon Fire Chief Kevin Sargent says Karissa Morris and her family were out of the home at 12,075 Last Street on the far east side of the city when they arrived on the scene just before midnight.
Sargent reports the garage was fully engulfed. Firemen got a knocked down on the fire that had started to spread to the home, but the blaze had spread into the attic which resulted in the entire home receiving significant damage. The garage and a car inside were a total lost.
Sargent says the cause of the fire has not been determined.
The fire call came in at 11:55 Wednesday night. Firemen cleared the scene at 2:18 Thursday morning. Jefferson County firemen provided mutual aid at the scene, while Kell and Woodlawn Firemen covered the Mt. Vernon department in the event of another fire.
