More than 600 flags were properly disposed of during a Flag Retirement Ceremony held over the weekend outside the Salem Elk’s Lodge.

The yearly program held close to flag day each year is performed by the Salem Elks Lodge 1678 and Trail Life Troop 262.

Nearly twice as many flags were collected for the retirement ceremony this year delaying the start as the flags were being properly folded.

The Exalted Ruler of the Salem Elks Mike Hooe noted the flag is flown with pride and confidence and as a symbol of our national unity while being an inspiration to untold millions.

“Today these colors are tattered and faded.  They have served their country with honor and distinction.  They have now reached the end of their patriotic journey.  May the fundamental virtues for which they waived forever be embedded in our hearts and souls.  With the service of tribute, memory and love to our faded and worn American flags, we honorable retire them with dignity and respect.”

There were 586 US Flags, two large Interstate flags, 15 Prisoner of War Flags, two US Marine flags, six Illinois flags and one Austrian and one Christian flag that were properly disposed of in a fire pit. Each was carried individually to their place of final disposal.
