Richard D. McCleary, age 83 of Mt. Vernon, formerly of Salem, passed away at his home on Wednesday, May 3, 2023.Richard was born on January 13, 1940, in Fairfield, Illinois, the son of David Alexander and Mary (Atkinson) McCleary. His mother passed away when he was 14 months old and he was raised by his mom, Rosella (Harrison) McCleary. He married Elizabeth “Betty” Carol (Wright) McCleary on September 9, 1960, and she preceded him in death on May 18, 2006. He is survived by his children, Michelle Walkington of Buckeye, AZ, Kimberly Wilson and husband Ken of Bonne Terre, MO, Sheryl Holzmann of Salem, Richard “Chip” McCleary and wife Pauline of Fon Du Lac, WI, and Angela Moore and husband Donte of Mt. Vernon; siblings, Stella Pinnell and husband Richard and Kay Johnson; 16 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.He was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth “Betty” McCleary; his parents, Dave and Rosella McCleary; his birth mother, Mary McCleary; and sister, Maggie Young.Richard worked for Illinois Power as a lineman and foreman. He was a member of the I.B.E.W. Local 702 in West Frankfort. He was a member of the Church of Christ. Richard was known as “the egg man” as he enjoyed passing out his white chocolate deviled eggs. He enjoyed driving, checking out the scenery and wildlife, such as deer, eagles, hawks, and turtles. He was a loving husband, dad, grandpa, papa, and friend. Funeral Services for Richard D. McCleary will be held at Crouse Funeral Home in Salem on Monday, May 8, 2023, at 5:00 pm, officiated by Ken Wilson. A eulogy will be provided by Chip McCleary. Visitation will be held on Monday from 3:00 pm until the time of the service. Private interment will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Fairfield.
