2023 04/27 – Jean A. ‘Smiley J’ Sloat

Jean A. “Smiley J” Sloat 90, of Centralia, passed away on April 24, 2023 at Odin Healthcare in Odin.

She was born on September 26, 1932 in Walnut Hill to Lester and Leota (Creed) Flanigan. She married Harvey E. Sloat on April 7, 1951 and he preceded her in death on February 4, 1987.

Jean is survived by one daughter, Connie S. Deadmond of Centralia, one daughter-in-law, Terry Sloat of Cynthiana, KY, five grandchildren, Arron S. Deadmond and wife Traci of Sandoval, Cindi Batson and husband H.D. of Cynthiana, KY, Adam Deadmond and wife Millie of Mt. Vernon, and Britton Dye and husband Derek of Cynthiana, KY, special friend and adopted granddaughter Vicki Berger of Centralia, one sister, Joyce Schulte of Tucson, AZ, one brother, George Flanigan of Centralia, two sisters-in-law Jackie Rightnowar and husband Don of Centralia, and Blanche Flanigan of Central City , ten great-grandchildren, Brynlee, Banyan, Arwyn Batson, Benjamin and Harvie Dye, Carter Deadmond, Kaelie Hanselman, Lauryn Hanselman, Logan Hanselman, and Kalissa deadmond, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Harvey E. Sloat, son Ben Sloat, two brothers, Lee Flanigan and Edward (Butch) Flanigan, and sister Marilyn Jolliff.

Jean was a former Administrative Assistant for North Wamac School in the early 1960’s until 1980’s, and served as Brookside Township Clerk for 36 years. She also worked at Jerry’s Grill and Bar from 1987 until the early 2000’s. She had an extensive collection of Shawnee and Hull pottery. She was of the Christian faith, and dearly loved her family.

Per Jean’s wishes, there will be no public services. In memory of Jean, memorials may be made to the donor’s choice and will be accepted by the Sutherland-Garnier Funeral Home at 235 North Sycamore Street in Centralia, Illinois (618) 532-3523, who is honored to be of service to the Sloat family.
