Marvin Dewey Shields, 87, of Shorewood Illinois, went home to the Lord on Friday, April 14, 2023, in Morris, Illinois.
He was born on January 29, 1936, in Bluford, Illinois to Raleigh and Mary Shields.
He attended Bluford High School, Southern Illinois University where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in English, and Chicago State University where he achieved his master’s degree in Corrections. After college, he served in the United States Army. In 1961, He married Sarah (Kay) Mabry and loved her deeply for 61 years of marriage. After teaching high school English, Marvin entered his career in corrections. He worked for the Illinois Department of Corrections, where he retired as an Assistant Warden. Marvin took great pride in being both an Army veteran and a Free Mason and was known for his wit and sassy sense of humor.
Marvin is survived by his wife Sarah (Kay) Shields (Mabry), daughters Cara Shields and Lisa Knight, grandchildren Nicole Merriman, Joshua Merriman (Dialah Azam), Trevor Knight, and Tyler Knight, siblings Mary Crouch (late Tom), Dorris Klotz (Bob), and Rex Shields, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents Raleigh and Mary Shields, and siblings James, Raleigh Jr., Reba, Douglas, Joyce, Charles, Lyndell, and Sharon.
A Visitation will be held Friday, April 21, 2023, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Hughey Funeral Home in Mount Vernon, Illinois. A Masonic Service will be held Friday, April 21, 2023, at 6:30 pm at Hughey Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held Saturday, April 22, 2023, at 10:00 am at Hughey Funeral Home. Full Military Rites will be held by the American Legion Post #141 at Oakdale Cemetery in Bluford, Illinois. Interment will follow.
A Memorial Service will also be held at Fred C. Dames Funeral Home in Joliet, Illinois on Saturday, April 29, 2023, from 11:00 am-2:00 pm. A prayer service will follow at 2:00. All are welcome to join in celebrating Marvin’s life.
