Salem Community High School students are benefiting from the school’s second-place finish in the Pepsi Bottle Cap challenge.
Having the second-highest number of bottle caps collected in the entire Pepsi Mid-America Territory earned the school $3,500.
Kari Thackery coordinated the effort and is excited they finished only second to Poplar Bluff, Missouri High School which has twice as many students.
She says a program about and a display of nocturnal animals held at the school on Tuesday was the latest activity.
“I got to use it for all sorts of enjoyment for Salem High. So we had the animal guy come, ice cream sundaes and popsicles for the whole school, we do candy and gift cards on Friday and all that comes from the Pepsi money. So we wanted to try and make it a really fun school year for the kids and that’s what we are doing.”
The animal display that included a fruit bat, hedgehog, raccoon, and Eagle Owl was put on by Bob Tarter of Animalogy. He has raised most of his animals since birth.
“I wouldn’t say tricks, there are disciplines that we do. There are certain times we need them to do something or show something but we would call it a discipline.”
Tarter warned against keeping wild animals as pets. He says it is not only illegal, but they can also be dangerous.
Tarter has traveled many states putting on educational displays at schools, colleges, and senior living facilities.
