Jefferson County was tops in the state for number of turkeys harvested during the 2022 youth turkey season and Marion County was third.
The Illinois Department of Natural Resources reports 54 turkeys were harvested in Jefferson County and 44 in Marion County during the two weekend season on March 26th-27th and April 2nd-3rd. The harvest was up one turkey in Jefferson County and three in Marion County compared to last year.
Statewide, the harvest was 1,258 birds, down from 1,304 last year. The record total was set in 2020 when 1,733 turkeys were harvested.
The turkey harvest in other South Central Illinois counties included 27 in Clay County, up 5; 19 in Clinton County, up 11; 19 in Fayette County, down from 44 the prior year; 18 in Washington County, down 1; and 25 in Wayne County, down 11.
