Weather not helpful to start of spring planting

Cool, wet weather kept farmers out of the fields for the most part as we hear in the weekly crop report.

Crop Statistician Mark Schleusener says temperatures this past week were below normal and rainfall was above average.

“There was less than 1 day suitable for field work last week and topsoil moisture was rated 4% short, 50% adequate and 46% surplus.  On Sunday soil temperatures ranged from the upper 30’s in northern Illinois to the mid 40’s in southern areas.”

Four percent of winter wheat has headed and 51% of the crop is rated in good to excellent condition, a slight improvement over the previous week.
