State lawmakers are working to address the increase in catalytic converter thefts in Illinois.

Chicago State Representative LaShawn Ford says the legislature passed a bill requiring metal dealers to keep a record of any catalytic converters.

“Basically, someone trying to sell a catalytic converter to a recyclable metal dealer, that dealer must make a copy of the seller’s license.”

Additionally, dealers can’t purchase a catalytic converter worth over $100 with cash.  Illinois currently ranks third in the nation for catalytic converter theft.
