Democrats deny police-aid plan answers anti-crime criticism

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) — Democrats in the General Assembly have proposed another anti-crime package focusing on support for police.

It offers unspecified grant funding for recruiting and training candidates, storing body camera video, and expanding mental health services for first responders. Republicans and some law enforcement communities feel law enforcement officers have been disrespected since a police overhaul was signed into law last year.

Democratic Rockford Rep. Dave Vella, a sponsor of the package presented Monday, said it didn’t come in response to any criticism of the SAFE-T Act, produced by the Legislative Black Caucus.
