Mt. Vernon City Firemen say heavy smoke was showing from the attached garage of a home at 2022 Casey early Saturday night. Shortly after firemen arrived, windows broke out of the garage and flames were visible.
Fire officials say they got a quick knockdown and kept the fire from spreading into the adjoining house. However, it sustained heavy heat and smoke damage.
A grandmother and her grandkids discovered the fire and were able to get out safely before firemen arrived.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Mt. Vernon Firemen received the alarm at 6:15 Saturday night and were on the scene for about two hours. Jefferson Fire Protection District firemen joined Mt. Vernon City Firemen on the scene, while Kell and Woodlawn stood by at the Mt. Vernon station in the event of another fire.
Mt. Vernon firemen say the home was rented by the Craig family.
